Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the RBT exam?

The RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) exam is a certification examination administered by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). It assesses your knowledge of the RBT Task List at a level consistent with that of an entry-level behavior technician who provides behavior-analytic services under supervision.

The RBT exam comprises 85 multiple-choice questions with 90 minutes to complete. Each question has 4 possible answers with only 1 correct answer. Of these 85 questions, 75 are scored while 10 are unscored pilot questions.

The RBT exam is administered exclusively at authorized Pearson VUE testing sites and US military bases. Testing locations are available in the United States, Canada (except Quebec and Ontario), United Kingdom (until January 1, 2026), and Australia (until January 1, 2027). You must schedule your appointment through Pearson VUE after your application is approved.

To pass the RBT exam:

  • Complete the required 40-hour training that meets BACB requirements
  • Study the RBT Task List (2nd ed.) thoroughly
  • Review materials from your 40-hour training and competency assessment
  • Understand practical applications of behavior analysis principles
  • Focus on the six content areas with their respective weightings
  • Familiarize yourself with the RBT Ethics Code (2.0)

The RBT exam covers six content areas with specific weightings:

  1. Measurement: 12 questions (16%)
  2. Assessment: 6 questions (8%)
  3. Skill Acquisition: 24 questions (32%)
  4. Behavior Reduction: 12 questions (16%)
  5. Documentation and Reporting: 10 questions (13%)
  6. Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice: 11 questions (15%)

The RBT exam difficulty varies by individual preparation and background. The BACB recommends thorough preparation using the RBT Task List and 40-hour training materials. Success depends on understanding practical applications of behavior analysis principles rather than memorization alone.

No, the RBT exam cannot be taken online from home. The exam is administered using a computer-based testing (CBT) format exclusively at authorized Pearson VUE testing centers and qualifying US military bases. All testing occurs under supervised, secure conditions.

The BACB uses the modified Angoff method to establish the passing score, which is criterion-referenced rather than percentage-based. This means your performance depends solely on demonstrating entry-level behavior technician knowledge, not competing against other test-takers. The exact passing score is not publicly disclosed.

You may retake the RBT exam for a maximum of 8 total attempts within a 12-month period following your initial examination approval. You must wait 7 days between each examination attempt. If you don’t pass after 8 attempts within the 12-month period, you must wait until your authorization period expires before reapplying.
